PORTLAND, Ore. – With just a little over two weeks to go before the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Cascade Collegiate Conference student-athletes will make their final attempts to hit automatic national qualifying marks when the 2009 CCC Track and Field Championships take place Thursday through Saturday at Mt. Hood CC.

In the CCC’s team race, Concordia will look to defend the conference men’s and women’s titles it captured at MHCC one year ago.

To date, the CCC has hit 61 automatic qualifying marks for the national meet, which will be staged May 21-23 in St. Louis. In addition, five others in the multi-events are currently on pace to post top 16 NAIA marks, which will earn them tickets into the national heptathlon or decathlon fields.

The CCC meet begins at 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Earl Klapstein Stadium on the MHCC campus in Gresham, Ore. Daily ticket prices are $6 for adults and $4 for students, children, and seniors.

Some of the best athletes in the NAIA ranks will be on display during the CCC’s three-day event. As of Tuesday, the CCC owned 34 top-10 national marks, including a nation-leading effort in the hammer throw by Concordia’s Greg Schultz (207-8), the defending NAIA champion. Three of Schultz’ teammates -- Paul Roshau in the javelin (214-6), Annie Hess in the discus (165-11), and Lauren Sexton in the javelin (155-4) -- currently rank No. 2 nationally in their events.

Individuals who have earned auto qualifying marks in multiple events include College of Idaho’s Stephanie Helm (1,500, 5,000) and Tegan Troutner (5,000, 10,000); Concordia’s Eric Burck (5,000 and 10,000), Jesse Staub (javelin, discus), Kristine Leonard (shot put, discus), Linsie Michels (800, 1,500), Andria Scheese (1,500, 5,000) and Katherine Tripp (shot put, discus); Eastern Oregon’s Quinten Baxter (shot put, hammer) and Marcella Bosch (5,000, 10,000); and Southern Oregon’s Ryan Ghelfi (10,000, half marathon) and Cameron Kreuz (800, 1,500).

Of the automatic qualifying marks attained by CCC athletes, Concordia leads the way with 28. The Cavs are followed by Eastern Oregon (13), Southern Oregon (8), College of Idaho (6), and Oregon Tech (4).
