GRESHAM, Ore. - Storm clouds and rain in the early going could not put a damper on the first day of competition at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Track & Field Championships held at Earl Klapstein Stadium on the campus of Mt. Hood Community College.
Concordia’s Annie Hess won her fourth consecutive CCC title in the women’s discus with a toss of 166-0. The Cavaliers are off to a fantastic start as Hess was followed by CU teammates Katherine Tripp, Emily Redmayne-Titley, Kristine Leonard, and Sharayah Kenaday for a top 5 sweep.
On the men’s side, Nik Kay uncorked a record-breaking disc toss of 180-7 to handily win the event. His fellow Concordia competitors Derek Fergasuon (151-4) and Leon Carl (150-7) gave the Cavaliers a 1-2-3 finish.
In the women’s heptathlon, College of Idaho’s Emily McCutchan leads a strong field of competitors behind top marks in the 100m hurdles (16.37) and 200m dash (26.43). Her 2,366 points leads Southern Oregon’s Rosie Converse (2,320) and Dominque Jacoy of Concordia (2,261).
With a top time in the 400m dash (51.21), Eastern Oregon’s Ivan Staeheli jumped into the lead in the men’s decathlon with 3,312 points. Teammate Chris Hoppie is right behind at 3,257 with a top time (11.52) in the 100m dash. CU’s Patrick Fennimore is in the hunt at 3,245 points and had the best long jump mark at 20-8 ½.
College of Idaho’s Teagan Troutner narrowly missed a meet record as she won the women’s 10,000k with a time of 37:52.17. Samantha Robert from Concordia finished second in 39:04.91, and Eastern Oregon’s Kendra Stone finished third with a time of 39:26.21.
The men’s 10k was close until Southern Oregon’s David Laney pulled away in the last 800m and posted a new meet record of 31:18.45. Paul Sartin from College of Idaho crossed in second (31:27.54), followed by Eastern Oregon’s Terry Johnson (31:31.56).
