Concordia's Annie Hess to Compete Sunday at Prefontaine Classic
EUGENE, Ore. – Coming off of her third straight NAIA national championship in the discus, Concordia senior Annie Hess is set as one of seven competitors in the event at the
Prefontaine Classic held at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field on Sunday.
Also competing in the discus will be: Stephanie Brown Trafton; Aretha Thurmond; Suzy Powell; Becky Breisch; Summer Pierson and Gia Lewis-Smallwood.
Brown Trafton was the 2008 Olympic Gold medalist, the fist U.S. woman to win the discus since 1932. Thurmond won the U.S. Olympic Trails and is currently ranked 10th in the world while Powell hold the American record in the event with a 222-0. The top five U.S. discus throwers according to the most recent performance list, will be represented in the field.
Hess is currently ranked 23rd in the United States with a 176-7 mark. She has a career best of 192-7 set at the 2008 NAIA Outdoor Championships, a distance which set the NAIA meet record and earned her the meet’s Outstanding Performer honor.
The Prefontaine Classic will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 7 and will be aired live on NBC beginning at 11 a.m. The women’s discus is set for a 10:55 a.m. start.
