ASHLAND, Ore. - The Southern Oregon volleyball team overcame a sluggish first set to knock off Concordia 18-25, 25-15, 25-14, 25-23 in the opening match of the 2009 Raider Classic. The match was a non-conference contest.

Top-ranked Fresno Pacific defeated Oregon Tech 25-8, 25-16, 25-15 in just 61 minutes in the second match of the day.

Five aces in six attempts by Concordia’s Raluca Dinca helped the Cavs win the first set 25-18, but after that it was all SOU.

Megan Bartling got the ball rolling for the Raiders in the second set with a pair of kills for a 5-0 lead. Another Bartling kill pushed the lead to 18-12 and the Raiders rolled.

In the third set, the Raiders rattled off seven straight points to take a 20-9 lead, highlighted by kills by Leanne Stennett, Leah Bergstrom and Heather Porter.

In the finale, SOU hit just .094 but still came away with the victory.

Junior Chelsea Hartman made the most of her first collegiate action, recording a match-high 12 kills and Stennett added 11. Red-shirt freshman setter Angela Spieker and freshman setter Caryn Westrick both had 22 assists for the Raiders.

In the evening matches, top-ranked and two-time defending National Champion Fresno Pacific swept host Southern Oregon 25-19, 25-17, 25-19.

Fresno Pacific is now 2-0 on the season and SOU fell to 1-1 on the season. Earlier this evening, Concordia defeated Oregon Tech 25-21, 13-25, 25-20, 17-25, 15-11.

On Saturday, Fresno Pacific takes on Concordia at Noon and Southern Oregon faces Oregon Tech at 2 p.m.

Martina Gregusova had 14 kills and two aces to lead Fresno Pacific.

Leah Bergstrom had six kills for the Raiders.

SOU tried to make a match of it in the third set. The Raiders stood toe-to-toe with the Sun Birds at 13-13 before the Sun Birds scored eight of the next nine points to put the match away.

Leanne Stennett had eight digs for the Raiders.
