CCC Players of the Week Named in Women's Soccer, Volleyball
PORTLAND, Ore. -- The following Cascade Collegiate Conference student-athletes were recognized as conference Players of the Week in their respective sports for the period Aug. 24-30.
Women’s Soccer
Offensive – College of Idaho’s Jessica Ayala, a 5-3 freshman midfielder from Salinas, Calif., assisted on the game-winning goal in the Yotes’ 2-1 upset victory over No. 21 Rocky Mountain College, then had two goals in a 5-2 win over University of Great Falls. C of I won its first two games of the season for the second time in school history. Other nominees: Brittney Yipp, Northwest Christian; Tennly Paul-Bowden, Eastern Oregon; Brooke Cole, Oregon Tech; Shelby Bloodworth, Concordia.
Defensive – College of Idaho’s Sadie Hughes, a 5-8 senior goalkeeper from Courtenay, B.C., totaled seven saves and allowed just one goal as the Yotes beat No. 21 Rocky Mountain 2-1 and University of Great Falls 5-2. Other nominees: Kristina Roome, Eastern Oregon; Georgie Christensen, Concordia.
Volleyball
Hitter – College of Idaho’s Naomi Reimer, a 5-7 junior from Killarney, Manitoba, had a career-high 22 kills in a 3-2 loss to No. 2 Concordia, and recorded back-to-back triple doubles last weekend. Reimer recorded at least one ace in each of the Yotes’ four matches in addition to totaling 49 kills, 76 assists and 37 digs. Other nominees: Cassie Bishop, Northwest Christian; Erika Doremus, Concordia; Leah Gradwohl, Warner Pacific; Leah Bergstrom, Southern Oregon.
Setter – College of Idaho’s Madie Machurek, a 5-4 junior from Eagle, Idaho, was named the CCC’s Setter of the Week after helping the Yotes to a 3-1 record at the Lewis-Clark State Tournament last weekend. Machurek totaled 79 assists and five kills for the Yotes, who nearly knocked off second-ranked Concordia-Irvine before falling in five games. Other nominees: Melita Elliot, Warner Pacific; Skyler Kamaka, Concordia.
Libero – College of Idaho’s Whitney Owen, a 5-11 junior from Caldwell, Idaho, totaled 96 digs – including a career high 34 vs. Lewis-Clark State last weekend. Owen also had 32 digs in a 3-2 loss to No. 2-ranked Concordia-Irvine, and totaled a career-high four aces in a 3-0 win over Great Falls. Other nominees: Mercedes LeClaire, Northwest Christian; Becky Johnstone, Southern Oregon.
