Northwest U. Falls to George Fox
KIRKLAND, Wash. – George Fox University scored two first half goals and held off a late Northwest University flurry for a 3-2 non-conference victory in the heat on the NU Athletic Field this afternoon.
With the temperature nearing the 90 degree mark, Northwest U. took an early lead as freshman Lizzie Perkins (Seattle, Wash.) put one past the GFU goalie from the deep right corner. Eight minutes later, GFU's Kirsten Cardwell scored the first of her two goals at 13:12 off an assist from teammate Esther Harder. Cardwell follow up with her second goal (35:17) to put the Bruins up 2-1 off an assist from forward Katelyn Peer.
George Fox (3-0) clinched the game at 56:51 in the second half as Esther Harder headed one past the NU goalkeeper from about 4 yards out. Credit Kayla Corn with the cross and assist. Northwest U. (0-4-1) made a late push as freshman Chelsi Pennington (Kent, Wash.) scored her goal (88:04) from a 35 yard kick on the left side that just grazed the outstretched fingertips of GFU goalie Becka Doyle. Two more shots by Eagles Stephanie Cummins (Soph., Renton, Wash.) and Abby Brauer (Soph., Kent, Wash.) couldn’t find the goal net as time expired and the Bruins wrapped up their third straight win of the season.
GFU’s Becka Doyle had 3 saves in goal as Northwest outshot George Fox, 16 to 9. Northwest U. played without starters Brittney Marshall and Yanet Candido who was injured in NU's game with Simon Fraser yesterday.
Northwest U. will remain at home next week as they host Bethany University (CA) on September 17 at 4:00 p.m.
