Concordia Opens CCC Season with 3-0 Win over Warriors
PORTLAND, Ore.—Led by a goal and an assist from Tyler Camp, Concordia defeated Corban 3-0 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference opener for both teams played at Delta Park on Saturday.
With the result, CU improved to 2-1-1 on the year while Corban fell to 1-2-1. The Cavaliers will next take the field at Warner Pacific on Saturday, Sept. 19 while the Warriors will host Warner Pacific on Sept. 16 in Salem, Ore.
It didn’t take long for the Cavaliers to take the lead as Camp (Vancouver, Wash.) placed an eight-yard shot into the back of the net in the 8th minute of play. James Gaynor (Vancouver, Wash.) and Turner Bloom (Kailua, Hawaii) were credited with the assist on the play by moving the ball from midfield to the right side and back into Camp, who was waiting deep in the enemy box.
Neither team would light the scoreboard the rest of the half to enter intermission with CU up 1-0. Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Facundo Dipascuale (Buenos Aires, Argentina) doubled the Cavalier advantage after a long cross from the right side where he was able to deflect the ball past the Warrior keeper from inside of 10 yards.
With less than seven minutes elapsing from Dipascuale’s score, Camp would find himself in attack mode again as a corner kick off his right foot played across the face of the goal where freshman teammate Mirza Ramic (Banja Luka, Bosnia) managed a leaping header which shook the back of the net.
“I thought we lost some drive after the first goal and we became a dull team the rest of the first half,” CU head coach Dan Birkey said. “Our concentration level dropped but to their credit they got a good look at themselves get a good look at themselves and got back to our strengths. We got back to having quality defensive organization and good ball movement.”
Concordia outshot the Warriors 11-to-6 in the game, including a 7-to-3 gap in the second half. The Cavs also enjoyed a 5-to-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Claudio Lazar (Ploiesti, Romania) had a single save to collect the shutout win. Aaron Franklin took the loss for the Warriors, tallying five saves.
“We have to have a nuisance quality to ourselves and have to make teams work against us,” Birkey said. “Campy had that quality by helping create turnovers, but other that our backline we didn’t show much grit out there.”
