CALDWELL, Idaho - Carlos Gomez scored a pair of goals as The College of Idaho men’s soccer team opened up the Cascade Conference season with a convincing 5-1 victory over Northwest Christian at Syringa Middle School.

The Yotes (1-1, 1-0 CCC) extended their CCC win streak to 13 games with the victory on their back-up field – as Simplot Stadium will not be ready for usage until next weekend.

Dominating play in the opening period, The C of I clanged a pair of shots in the first 20 minutes off the crossbar, before freshman Matt Kelly flicked an Emir Kobic pass on the left flank into the right corner of the goal in the 22nd minute.  Less than ten minutes later, the Yotes struck again, as Mats Boehnke headed home a throw-in from Matt Kelly.  Gomez got his first goal of the game just before the break, touching home a nice feed from senior Kazuki Murata.

The Beacons (1-4, 0-1), who snapped a 400-plus minute scoreless streak on Thursday in a 5-2 win at Walla Walla, got on the board after Greg Erickson was fouled in the box on an attack and slotted home the penalty kick.

Jesus Lopez, however, would strike back in the 70th minute on a nifty run down the left side, chipping the ball into the right corner of the net.  Gomez would complete the scoring in the waning moments, heading home a cross over the box from fellow freshman Cristian Rada.

The Coyotes held a commanding 20-4 edge in shots and had seven corner kicks in the match.

The C of I returns to action on Wednesday, also at Syringa Middle School, hosting Canyon County rival Northwest Nazarene at 5 p.m.
