KANSAS CITY, Mo. – California Baptist and Concordia retained the No.1 and No. 2 rankings in the second regular season NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, the NAIA announced on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
The two teams will square off in Portland on Saturday, Sept. 19 at Delta Park’s Strasser Field. Originally set for a 3 p.m. kickoff , the battle will now be contested at 3:30 p.m. Concordia is 1-1-0 all-time against Cal Baptist with a 4-0 win at home during the 2004 season and a 2-0 loss on the road in 2002.
California Baptist gained a small amount of breathing room from Concordia in the polls by capturing 14 first place votes this week to Concordia’s eight. Their one point lead in last week’s poll has been extended to a six point lead, 615-609. The rest of the top five is rounded out by No. 3 Azusa Pacific University (Calif.), No. 4 Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) and No. 5 Lee University (Tenn.)
Concordia, last season’s runner-up in the NAIA National Championship, remains in second place where it started the season. Concordia won both of their games last week, defeating Rocky Mountain College (Mont.), 3-1 on Sept. 11 and then shutting out then-ranked No. 18 Carroll College (Mont.), 3-0 on Sept. 13. Senior goalkeeper Georgie Christensen has helped guide the Cavaliers to their 7-0-0 start with three shutouts.
Azusa Pacific moves up one spot from last week to No. 3 without playing a game. The Cougars will end their long layoff on Sept. 21 at No. 11 Vanguard University (Calif.) in a Golden States Athletic Conference matchup.
Lindsey Wilson jumps up one spot to No. 4 after defeating then-ranked No. 3 Lee, 1-0 at home on Sept. 12. The victory gives Lindsey Wilson its eighth win (8-1-1) in 10 contests against Lee. The Blue Raiders have now won three straight games since dropping two straight to California Baptist and Azusa Pacific in the Cougar Classic in California. Three of Lindsey Wilson’s four victories have come off of shutouts.
Defending National Champion Lee drops to No. 5 after falling 1-0 against Lindsey Wilson last week. Lee has started the season with a 2-2 record despite only allowing two goals; both of Lee’s victories have come on shutouts.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences, independents and unaffiliated groups. The third regular season Top 25 poll will be announced on Sept. 22.
