Coyote Men Drop 1-0 Decision to NNU
CALDWELL, Idaho - Renatto Brito converted a penalty kick in the 58th minute for the lone goal, as Northwest Nazarene upended The College of Idaho, 1-0, in today's Canyon County clash at Syringa Middle School.
After controlling the play in the first half but not scoring a goal, the Crusaders (3-4) took advantage of a foul in the far corner of the penalty box - with Brito driving home the winner past C of I keeper Aaron Reynolds, to the far left corner of the net.
The Yotes (1-2) would have a pair of good opportunities to tie the score, as Jesus Lopez struck the far post on a corner kick in the 60th minute, then Drew Smith was turned away by NNU keeper Alexander Engemann. The C of I held a 9-5 edge in shots in the final 45 minutes and saw the Crusaders commit 14 fouls, but could not find the net.
Stellar play by the Coyote defense kept The C of I in the game - as Spencer Ward cleared a Benjamin Mangeac shot off the goal line in the 21st minute, with Reynolds deflecting a pair of NNU shots away from close range during the contest.
The C of I returns to action on Saturday, hosting Oregon Tech at noon. The game marks the Yotes debut at 5,000-seat Simplot Stadium, located at the corner of 24th-Avenue and Blaine Street in Caldwell (next to the Caldwell Night Rodeo Grounds).
