BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore. – Despite a late goal by senior Kacie Emerick (Bellingham, Wash.) in the waning minutes of the game, Corban's women's soccer team watched its lead fade in the final seconds and came away with a 3-3 tie in double overtime against NCAA Division II member Western Oregon Tuesday afternoon at Warrior Field.

Coming off a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Rocky Mountain on Saturday that handed fourteenth-year head coach Marty Ziesemer the 150th win of her illustrious career, Corban was looking to extend its unbeaten streak and push its winning percentage above the .500 mark for the second time this season.

Corban got on the board first in the 15th minute when freshman Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.) eluded a Wolf defender and slipped a shot into the lower right corner of the goal for the early 1-0 lead. The first-year Warrior netted her second goal of the season when she slipped a shot past a diving WOU goalkeeper and began a scoring on-slaught by both teams.

Just over 35 minutes later, Western Oregon got on the scoreboard in the 41st minute when Rachelle Kliewer notched her team-leading fifth goal of the season via a 20-yard shot up and over an oncoming Warrior net-minder.

The score would remain tied at halftime and did not change until the 65th minute when WOU's Cori Young took a through ball from Marina Austin for her first goal of the season. The play began when Austin snuck a nifty past behind the Warriors' defense onto the awaiting foot of Young, who flicked a shot in the upper left corner of the goal for the one-goal Western Oregon lead, 2-1.

Less than 10 minutes later, senior Jessica Matthews (Yelm, Wash.) knotted the game at 2-all when she deposited her shot into the back of the net for her second goal of the season. The play started with a Tsugawa shot that was initially saved by WOU's keeper, but got out of the grasp of Western Oregon's final line of defense and onto the foot of Matthews. Without hesitation, the fourth-year Warrior sent the ball into the back of the net and put Corban back into the game.

With the clock quickly ticking toward triple zeros, Corban began to apply the offensive pressure and were awarded when Emerick scored her first goal of the season off a deflection in the 89th minute. Tsugawa and junior Katie Hanson (Salem, Ore.) started the play by both taking shots at Western Oregon's goal, as the Wolves' keeper made each save but the ball got away from her on both occasions. In the end, Emerick was in the right place at the right time and handed Corban a slim one-goal lead, 3-2, when less than 90 seconds remaining.

Unfortunately, Western Oregon did not go down without a fight as the Wolves would quickly counter-attack during the final minute of regulation. With 38 seconds left, Kliewer scored her second goal of the game when she unleashed a shot from 10 yards out that eluded Corban's keeper and tied the game once again at 3-3.

During the two extra periods, Corban had the best scoring opportunity when Tsugawa broke away from Western Oregon's defense leaving a one-on-one chance against the Wolves' keeper. Unfortunately, Tsugawa pushed her attack too far ahead and could not recover the ball before it was scooped up by Western Oregon's final wall of defense.

In a evenly played game, both teams registered 13 shots with Corban unleashing one more shot on goal (8-7) than Western Oregon.

Senior goalkeeper Jennifer Bassett (Keizer, Ore.) registered a game-high four saves for Corban, while playing all 110 minutes between the pipes. Meanwhile, Western Oregon used a pair of net-minders in Kelsie Blachly and Brittney Rigtrup. Blachly played the opening 45 minutes before giving way to Rigtrup for the game's final 65 minutes, as the second WOU keeper recorded a team-high three saves during her time between the pipes.

With today's result, Corban moves to 3-3-2 overall versus Western Oregon's 1-3-3 win-loss record. The Warriors will return to the field on Saturday, September 19th, against the NAIA's No. 10-ranked Simon Fraser beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Warrior Field.
