ASHLAND, ORE. -- Melissa Melloni’s goal two minutes into overtime gave Simpson a 2-1 overtime victory over Southern Oregon today at University Field.

Simpson snapped a four-match losing streak with the victory and Southern Oregon fell to 1-5-1 on the season. SOU travels to Western Oregon Sunday.

Southern Oregon jumped on the board at the 30-minute mark of the first half as junior Auika Muragin picked up a loose ball in front of the net and scored from seven yards out.

Courtney Opie tied the match at 1-1 six minutes later with an unassisted goal and the score stayed that way until overtime, despite a couple late regulation chances by the Raiders.

Tori Chambliss and Denise Powell both came up empty handed in the final couple minutes of regulation.

In overtime, Melloni received a pass from Karissa Hansen and scored to end the match.

Southern Oregon out-shot Simpson 17-8 and had an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks in the match.

“We had plenty of chances to win this game going away,” SOU head coach Jon Clement said. “We have to be more firm and defiant in what we are doing to win games. But you have to give credit to Simpson, they scraped their way to a victory today.”
