New recruits give Eastern Oregon reason to celebrate.
LA GRANDE, Ore. -- Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball head coach Isaac Williams has completed his first recruiting class as a head coach.
Williams recently announced his final two recruits for the 2009-10 season, Jacques Wilson and Cody Mortensen.
Wilson, originally from Marietta, Ga., moved to Pocatello, Idaho after his father was named the assistant coach at Idaho State University. The move transplanted Wilson to Century High School for his junior season. Wilson, a six foot, one inch and 190 pound combo guard, had a pretty smooth transition being named the Idaho state Player of the Year his junior season. He was named first team all-state his junior and senior years at Century.
Wilson signed with NCAA Div. 1, Montana State University where he made the rotation as a true freshman. After a coaching change at MSU, Wilson elected to transfer to Southern Utah, another NCAA Div. 1 program. Wilson sat out a year due to NCAA rules and eventually transferred after another coaching change.
Wilson moved to the NAIA level with a transfer to Div. 1 William Jewell in California. At William Jewell last season, Wilson averaged 10.4 points per game, 2.5 rebounds and two assists per game. The Cardinal advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NAIA Div. 1 National Tournament last year.
Wilson’s father found success last year in the postseason nearly defeating top-seeded Memphis as the head coach at Cal State-Northridge in the first round of the NCAA Div. 1 National Tournament.
Mortensen joins the Mountaineers after two seasons at Mt. Hood Community College. The junior transfer averaged 11 points and six rebounds per game for the Saints last season. He led Mt. Hood to the NWAACC tournament last season.
Mortensen, a six foot, four inch and 210-pound forward played in the NWAACC All-Star Game as a sophomore at Mt. Hood. He had a team high 10 rebounds in the game for the South All-Stars.
Mortensen was a standout at Middleton High School in Middleton, Idaho before signing with Mt. Hood Community College. He led Middleton to the Class 4A state quarterfinals his senior season.
