BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Despite a goal by junior Katie Hanson (Salem, Ore.) in the 16th minute, Corban's women's soccer team fell to the NAIA's No. 10-ranked Clan of Simon Fraser, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field.
Looking to extend its unbeaten streak to three games, Corban fell behind in the opening 13 minutes thanks to a goal by Simon Fraser's Lauren Lachlan. The scoring play began with a pass from Caitlyn Young to the middle of the field where Lachlan dribbled twice to her left before unleashing a shot into the upper right corner of the goal. Lachlan's shot eluded a diving Warrior keeper for the game's opening goal and an early 1-0 lead for the Clan.
Less than three minutes later, Hanson got Corban on the board when she redirected a shot by senior Jessica Matthews (Yelm, Wash.) into the back of the net. Matthews began the play with a shot from the upper right corner of the 18-yard box that was initially saved by SFU's keeper, but onto the awaiting foot of Hanson who knocked the ball into the goal for her team-leading third goal of the season.
The score would remain tied at 1-1 until the 24th minute when Simon Fraser's Sarah Boulton took the ball along the far sideline, cut back towards the goal, and sent a shot towards Corban's goal. A Warrior defender blocked the shot and in an attempt to clear the ball over the end line, the ball was unintentionally knocked it into the goal and put SFU up 2-1.
The Clan's one-goal lead would hold until halftime, as Corban outshot its nationally-ranked opponent by two (7-5) over the opening 45 minutes.
In the 57th minute, Simon Fraser's Caitlin Carruthers extended the Clan's lead to two goals when she teamed with Alanna Foster for SFU's third goal of the game. Foster began the play by sending a pass along the far sideline to Carruthers. Using nifty footwork, Carruthers got around a Warrior defender and then attempted to send a crossing pass towards the goal only to have it redirected into the net by Corban's keeper for the game's final score.
Senior goalkeeper Jennifer Bassett (Keizer, Ore.) registered a game-high four saves for Corban, while Simon Fraser's Cassie Newbrook recorded three saves during her time between the pipes.
With today's loss, Corban falls to 3-4-2 overall versus Simon Fraser's win-loss mark of 5-2-1 on the season.
