Eagles Snap Streak, Down Warner Pacific
KIRKLAND, Wash. - The NU Eagles snapped a three match losing streak by defeating Warner Pacific 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 25-20) in Cascade Conference play tonight.
In set one, NU jumped out to an early 7-1 punctuated by a Lauren Holtz kill and would build their lead to 17-8 on another kill by Holtz. The Knights would get no closer than 5 points as the Eagles would win, 25-18.
Warner Pacific would battle back in set two and lead 11-8 on Sam Kolakowski's kill. The set would remain close the entire way with ten ties. WPC would lead 21-19, but NU would fight their way back to tie the set at 21-21. The set would see its final tie at 23-all as a kill by WPC's Leah Gradwohl and a Gradwohl service ace would win it for the Knights, 25-23.
The third set would be just as closely contested as set two as NU and WPC would exchange points and the set would see 12 ties. With the Knights leading 19-18, the Eagles would tie the set and take the lead for good on Lauren Holtz's kill. Holtz and teammate Breanna Covey would end the set with consecutive kills (25-23).
In the final set, WPC would lead early, 8-5, but the Eagles would go on a 15-0 run to take a commanding 20-8 lead. But the Knights weren't about to go away and would go on a 12-2 run of their own on outstanding serving by Melita Elliott and Leah Gradwohl to pull to within two points (22-20), but the Eagles would gather themselves and halt the WPC momentum with three straight kills to end the set and the match.
Eagle Lauren Holtz, led the Eagles (5-11, 4-3 CCC) with her 18 kills and 26 digs. Ashley Peavey added 12 kills and Lauryn Ernster had a game high 39 assists. Anu Akamine contributed 25 digs and Elle Ottow added another 15 digs for the Eagles.
"We came out ready to go tonight and it showed," commented Eagle Head Coach, Jessie Dietrich. "it was a great win."
Warner Pacific (6-7, 2-5 CCC) was led by Leah Gradwohl's 12 kills and 21 digs while teammate Megan Marineau had 13 kills for the Knights. Melita Elliott had 27 assists and 15 digs.
