Wilkins Helps Concordia Will Overtime Win Over Corban
BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore.—Down a goal late in the game, Concordia rallied to tie en route to capturing a 2-1 overtime win over Corban in Cascade Collegiate Conference men’s soccer action on Tuesday.
With the result, Concordia improved to 6-1-1 and 5-0-0 in CCC action while Corban fell to 1-6-1 overall and 0-5-0 in league action.
After a scoreless first half of play, Corban’s Mark Mendenhall put the Warriors on the board in the 56th minute with a one-timer that slipped past Concordia keeper Claudio Lazar. Coming off a free kick, Mendenhall’s score was aided by teammates Ayouba Moussa and Nolan Dempster who were each credited with an assist on the play.
Despite taking 18 shots to Corban’s five, the Cavaliers would not find the back of the net until the waning moments of regulation as a Mirza Ramic blast from 18 yards squared the match at 1-1 and force overtime where the Cavs would generate the golden goal in just over two minutes of play.
CU senior Jon Wilkins, a keeper on the squad seeing time on the field for just the second time this season, made his first goal as a Cavalier a momentous one as his flick at the 92:04 mark ended the contest with the road team prevailing. Facundo Dipascuale was given the assist on the play.
Lazar stopped three shots to pick up the win for the Cavaliers while Corban counterpart Aaron Franklin collected seven saves while allowing the two goals in 90-plus minutes of action in front of the net.
Concordia pushed the ball for 10 corner kicks compared to two for the Warriors, who were playing a man down the last moments of regulation and all of the extra session as Moussa picked up his second yellow card at the 89:34.
Concordia returns to action on Oct. 3 when it travels to Oregon Tech for a 1 p.m. match in Klamath Falls, Ore. Corban will next take the field on the same day by hosting Northwest University at 2:30 p.m.
