WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The second game of a doubleheader was almost a mirror image of the first as the Northwest University men came back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to tie Whitman College 2-2 in regulation in a non-conference opener for both teams. The NU and Whitman women played a similar game which ended in a 3-3 deadlock.
Whitman (0-0-1) started the scoring as Todd Wallenius scored first from the left side at the 22:39 mark off a Brian Percival assist. Teammate Conner Bottomly gave WC a 2-0 lead with his goal from Leland Matthaeus' assist at 40:53 in the first half. Whitman outshot NU 11 to 5 in the first half.
It took Northwest U. (0-0-1) a while to get going in the second half but Matt Walton finally got the Eagles on the scoreboard at the 79:16 mark off an assist by Alex Taylor from 15 yards out. It looked like Whitman might pull out the victory, but with 22 seconds left in the game, Brandon Screen put one into the left corner of the goal courtesy of a Nathan Murphy assist. NU outshot Whitman 9-6 in the second half.
Northwest goalkeeper senior Kyle Wall (Seattle, Wash.) had 5 saves in goal for the Eagles while Tim Shu and Devin Khu combined for 1 save for Whitman.
Northwest U. will play Linfield College in another non-conference contest in Walla Walla tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
