PORTLAND, Ore. – Playing in the second straight double-overtime match, the Concordia men’s soccer team settled for a 1-1 tie against Cal Baptist in a non=conference tilt held at Delta Park on Saturday.

With the result, Concordia moved to 1-1-1 on the season while Cal Baptist earned their third straight tie to go 0-0-3 on the year.

“We weren’t quite sharp, especially in the first half,” CU head coach Dan Birkey said. “We were a little flat in terms of possession but our defensive organization was solid and as each period went on we got better, produced good chances and put pressure on the other team.”

After a scoreless first half, Facundo Dipascuale (Buenos Aires, Argentina) put the Cavaliers on the board with a flying finish in the 58th minute. Moments before, Tyler Camp (Vancouver, Wash.) took a sharp angled shot from the right-hand side which caused the ball to ricochet into the mix where Dipascuale headed the ball past the keeper.

A little more than 10 minutes later, the Lancers found the equalizer with Osvaldo Bastida (Anaheim, Calif.) connecting on a 15-yard strike from the right side and into the net on the opposite post.

Both teams produced opportunities in both overtime sessions with Camp providing a pair of dangerous attacks for the Cavs and Josh Cormier (Las Vegas, Nev.) nearly ending the contest in the 102nd minute with a kick that sent the ball off the right crossbar.

Both keepers, Claudio Lazar (Ploiesti, Romania) for CU and Dan Kelly (Temecula, Calif.) for CBU, collected five saves while allowing a single goal in 110 minutes of action in front of the net.

“Claudio was the player of the game for us,” Birkey said. “He made some spectacular saves for us by being very decisive and going out to get to the ball.”

Cal Baptist outshot the home team 16-to-12 but took also took 16 fouls compared to six for the Cavs. Both teams spawned five corner kicks.

Concordia will resume play when it opens Cascade Collegiate Conference play at home against Corban on Saturday, Sept. 12. Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Delta Park.
