Sharp Shooting Mountaineers Beat Beacons

LA GRANDE, Ore. -- The Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team hit a school record 15 three-pointers en route to an 80-47 victory over Northwest Christian University Friday.

Every Mountaineer (12-6) (6-2) scored in the victory. Eastern finished 56 percent from the field and 57 percent from behind the perimeter.

Shaylee Nielsen led a very balanced EOU scoring attack with 15 points. Kelsea Hurliman added 12 points. The freshman went 4 for 4 from the field.

Northwest Christian (7-10) (1-7) dropped their seventh consecutive game. Eastern held the Beacons to 33 percent from the field and 21 percent from behind the perimeter. Randi Keyser led NCU with eight points.

Eastern Oregon outrebounded the Beacons 37-21, and had 27 assists to Northwest Christian’s 11. EOU committed 21 turnovers, while NCU had 17.

The Beacons jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but the Mountaineers responded with a 24-5 run. Eastern improves to 11-1 on the season when it shoots a better percentage than its opponents. EOU is now 12-2 when they hold opponents under 60 points.

Eastern Oregon head Anji Weissenfluh is now seven wins away from her 200th career victory. She is now 193-83 at EOU, and holds the school’s highest winning percentage in women’s basketball history.

The Mountaineers host Corban College Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The Warriors (8-12) (3-5) fell to The College of Idaho Friday, 73-53. Northwest Christian travels to C of I Saturday.
