Northwest U. Climbs Into Tie For Second
KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University defeated Northwest Christian 57-45, to win their 12th game of the season and improve their Cascade Conference record to 8-3 and into a tie for second place in the league with Eastern Oregon.
Northwest U. led 27-22 in a low scoring, defensive first half as Northwest U. shot 31% and Northwest Christian shot 36% from the floor.
In the second half, Northwest U. would build its lead to ten points, 33-23 on a jumper by Marielle McKean at the 15:52 mark. With 11:19 to go in the game, Alexa Breidenbach would hit a 3-pointer to increase Northwest’s lead to 14 points 41-27. NU’s lead would grow to 17 points at the 7:44 mark as Marielle McKean would drain a jumper from the right side of the key. Two free throws by Northwest Christian’s Lori Renner would close the gap to 51-38 with 5:29 remaining and then both teams would hit a scoring drought for nearly 3 minutes until NU’s Jessalyn Jackson would convert two free throws with 2:33 to go in the game to put the Eagles up, 53-38. The teams would trade free throws the final minute and 41 seconds as Northwest’s Alyssa Welk would end the scoring with her two free throws with 18 seconds to go to make it, 57-45.
Senior Jessica Wilkerson (Issaquah, Wash.) led Northwest U. (12-7, 8-3 CCC) with 11 points and 5 rebounds. Teammate Jessalyn Jackson (Soph., Vancouver, Wash.) added 10 points and a game high 8 rebounds for the Eagles. Northwest’s defense held Northwest Christian to 27% shooting on the night while they managed to drop in 34% of their shots.
Northwest Christian (8-12, 2-9 CCC) was led by Lori Renner’s 10 points and 7 rebounds as the Beacons out rebounded the Eagles, 43-40. Katie Collins added 7 points and Aly Bruns contributed 6 points and 7 rebounds for the Beacons.
