Northwest U. Defeats Portland Bible
KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University had five players score in double figures tonight as they defeated Portland Bible College, 82-68, in non-conference play.
The Eagles led 16-15 at the 12:31 mark as they began to put some distance between them and the Wildcats. NU would go on a 6-0 run to increase their lead to 22-15 punctuated by Stedman Richardson’s jumper from 15 feet out. Portland Bible would make it 22-17 on two Maycol Rivera free throws, but a 3-pointer by Rich Skillman and layup by Greg Peters would put Northwest up by 10, 27-17, with 9:52 to go in the half. Another trey by Skillman followed by another Peter’s layup would make it 32-19 with 8:02 to go until halftime. NU’s biggest led of the half would come with 4:28 to go as they would increase their lead to 16 points, 37-21. Tyson Christie would hit two free throws at the end of the half to end the coring with Northwest U. in the lead, 39-25.
The second half would find Portland Bible slowly chipping away at the NU lead and a Stephen McCall 3-pointer would pull PBC to within 5 points, 52-47, at the 12:25 mark but Tyson Christie would answer with his dunk to put NU back up by 7, 54-47 twelve seconds later. Another Portland Bible run would make it a two point ball game, 60-58 at the 7 minute mark, but an 8-0 Northwest run would put them up once again, 68-58, with 4:36 remaining. Northwest would make 6 of 8 from the free throw line in the final minutes of the game to pull out the 82-68 win as Stephen McCall drilled a 3-pointer s time ran out.
Northwest U. (13-10, 7-5 CCC) was playing with out starting post, Greg George, who was fulfilling a ROTC obligation. Leading the five Eagles in double figures was Blake Solomon (Sr., Kent, Wash.) with 17 points. Junior Tyson Christie (Sherwood, Ore.) added 16 point, Greg Peters (Belmont, St. Vincent)dropped in 15 points, Stedman Richardson (Jr., Federal Way, Wash.) scored 14 points and sophomore Rich Skillman (Everson, Wash.) contributed 11 points for the Eagles. Peters completed a double-double on the night, his tenth of the season, with 16 rebounds as the Eagles out rebounded the Wildcats, 34-29. NU shot 78% from the free throw line.
Portland Bible (16-9, 7-0) was led by Austin Hodges’ 23 points. Teammates Stephen McCall and 6-10 center, Michael Cooper, each scored 14 points for the Wildcats who shot 42% on the night and 33% from the 3-point line. PBC converted 77% of their free throws.
