LA GRANDE, Ore. -- The Eastern Oregon University women's basketball fell to rival, The College of Idaho, 47-43, Friday night.
With the victory, the Lady Yotes are in sole possession of first place in the Cascade Conference. EOU (10-6) (5-2) was led by Samantha Flett's 11 points. The game pitted the top two teams in the conference. The College of Idaho holds a half game advantage over Northwest University.
C of I (10-4) (6-1) jumped out to a 6-0 lead and Eastern failed to score until 5:02 into the game when Kyle Miller hit a three-pointer. Kelsea Hurliman tied the score two minutes later with a three-pointer. EOU continued on the run scoring five more points to complete the 11-0 run.
Eastern stretched its lead to 20-11, it's largest lead of the game, at the 5:18 mark in the first half. The College of Idaho closed the half on a 9-3 run. EOU led at halftime 23-20. The Mountaineers shot 25 percent from the field in the first half, while the Lady Yotes shot 34 percent. The teams combined for 13 turnovers.
Eastern lost the lead in the second half, and the lead would go back-and-forth for the first 12 minutes of the second half. The Mountaineers had their last lead with 8:25 left in regulation. EOU went scoreless until Flett hit a jumpshot with 2:52 left. C of I led 40-37 at that point.
The College of Idaho had its largest lead 44 seconds later, 43-37. EOU cut the lead to 45-43 with 25 seconds left after an Alyssa Garro hit a three-pointer. That was as close as the Mountaineers would get.
The lead changed 10 times and the game was tied five times. The Yotes held off Eastern despite not making a field goal in the last 2:08. College of Idaho outscored the Mountaineers 28-8 in the paint. EOU shot 29 percent from the field and 25 percent from behind the perimeter.
Eastern Oregon is now 10-2 this season when they hold opponents under 60 points. The Mountaineers travel to College Place, Wash. Sunday to play at Walla Walla University at 2 p.m. The College of Idaho will host Corban College Jan. 15 for its next game.
