C of I's Sarah Harris Tabbed NAIA Volleyball Player of the Week
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - College of Idaho middle blocker Sarah Harris was honored today as NAIA National Volleyball Player of the Week, released this afternoon by the national office.
The senior becomes the first Coyote athlete to receive a national award since 2008 and is the fourth volleyball player in program history to earn the award.
Harris was instrumental in the Lady Yotes perfect weekend, including a three-set sweep of then 12th-ranked Southern Oregon. Against the Raiders, she recorded 14 kills with just one hitting error – adding a pair of solo blocks and three block assists. One night later, Harris added 13 kills and a season-high eight blocks and three service aces in a win over Oregon Tech – extending C of I’s Cascade Conference home win streak to 51 matches in a row.
The Middleton, Idaho native also eclipsed the 900-kill mark for her career and moved into the No. 10 spot on the career kills list.
She joins Amanda Basanez (’03) and Erin Cherrington (’06), who earned NAIA Setter of the Week and Charity Gaston (’05), who earned NAIA Libero of the Week honors. Three other C of I women’s athletes have won NAIA National Player of the Week awards – Katie Zillner (’08) in softball, Amy Rhoades (’07) in soccer, and Alyson Pincock (’01) in basketball, while five C of I men’s players have won the award – Jason Southward (’02) and Jared Larsen (’99 and ’00) in soccer, Luke Hays (’99) and Tim Onofrei (’96) in baseball), and Mark Owen (’85) in basketball.
The wins helped vault the Lady Yotes three spots in the latest NAIA Top-25 Coaches’ Poll to No. 14 in the tabulation released this afternoon. It marks the 62nd straight week that The C of I has received votes in the national poll.
The Coyotes return to action this weekend at Corban and Northwest Christian, before returning home on Tuesday to meet rival Northwest Nazarene.
