Corban Trio Scores in Win Over Rival NCU
BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Sophomore Brittany Bowman (Shelton, Wash.) put home the game-winner in the 21st minute for her first goal in over two years, as Corban's women's soccer team captured its 11th win of the season Saturday courtesy of a 3-0 shut out of the visiting Beacons of Northwest Christian on Warrior Field.
With the win, Corban improves to 11-3-0 overall and 3-2-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Northwest Christian falls to 3-8-1 overall and 1-4-0 in league games.
Bowman struck first for the Warriors, rolling a shot into the lower right corner on a rebound off a shot by fellow sophomore Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.) that gave the Warriors the lead in the 21st minute.
Corban continued to press on offense, as senior Miranda O'Connor (Gladstone, Ore.) netted her first collegiate goal in the 36th minute. O'Connor gathered the rebounded shot by freshman Rileigh Mankin (Manteca, Calif.) and sent the ball directly into an open goal from seven yards away to double Corban's lead. The Warriors outshot NCU 13-2 over the first 45 minutes on the way to a 2-0 advantage at the half.
Corban continued to press the Beacon defense in the second half, quickly adding to their lead with a Tsugawa goal in the 47th minute. Tsugawa took a pass from freshman Audrey Sullivan (Puyallup, Wash.) and cut around the NCU defense before beating the Beacon keeper with a shot to the lower left corner to give the Warriors a 3-0 advantage.
That margin would remain the same throughout the final 43 minutes despite numerous chances for Corban to add to their lead. The Warriors outshot the Beacons once again in the second frame, 10-5, including several one-on-one opportunities for Sullivan that were turned aside at the last second by Northwest Christian's net minder.
Corban's offense generated 14 shots on goal out of 23 total chances, while the Warrior defense limited NCU to two shots on goal out of seven opportunities. Northwest Christian's best offensive opportunity was foiled by Corban's freshman goalkeeper Alexis Beattie's (Brea, Calif.) back-to-back saves in the 58th minute, as the Warriors went on to register their seventh shutout of the season.
Beattie only needed to make two saves on the afternoon before turning over net-minding duties to junior Amber Kliewer (Fox Island, Wash.) for the final 12 minutes. Kliewer did not need to make any saves in preserving Corban's shutout win. Northwest Christian's Ali Foster made a game-high 11 saves, while standing all 90 minutes between the pipes for the Beacons.
The Warriors will continue their home stand, as they return to action next Friday, October 22nd, hosting the 'Yotes of The College of Idaho in a contest scheduled to kick off at 12:30 p.m. on Warrior Field.
