VICTORIA, B.C.—Working with a nine-stroke lead through the first round of play, the Concordia men’s golf team used the majority of the buffer to claim a two-stroke win at the Vikes Shootout held at Cordova Bay Golf Course on Tuesday.
The Cavaliers fired a 10-over 294 today after carding a 292 on Monday for a 586 two-round total. The host Vikings of the University of Victoria posted the tournament’s best round with a 3-over 287 on Tuesday but fell a pair of strokes shy of the Cavs. Corban put together two solid days of play and finished third overall in the team standings.
Lethbridge University (314-301=615), Simon Fraser (303-313=616), Calgary (317-308=625), Lethbridge College (312-314=626), and Alberta (325-308=633) rounding out the team competitors.
Joey Duwe (73-69—142) captured his first individual title this season with an even-par 142, overcoming a three-shot deficit heading into the final round with the best score of the afternoon to win by a single stroke over a pair of Concordia golfers – Jed Dalton (72-71—143) and Taylor Schmidt (70-73—143). The third-year Warrior shot his second 69 of the season and captured the fourth individual title of his career.
Schmidt held the first-day lead by two strokes.
Five strokes back of Dalton and Schmidt, Jesse Heinly (74-74—148) placed sixth overall with back-to-back 74s or the Cavs. Jonny Miller (76-84—160) ended the event in 33rd place while Jared Moe (86-77—162) came through with CU’s No. 4 score on Tuesday with a 76 in the final tour of the course.
Also counting in Corban's overall team score were Steve Landis, Michael May, and Chris Dudley, as the trio finished tied for 10th, tied for 24th, and tied for 28th respectively. Landis (77-73—150) moved up five spots to finish in the Top 10 for the second time this season and 10th time during his career, while May (80-77—157) shot his fifth sub-80 round of the year and Dudley (81-77—158) finished in the middle of the pack this week after carding the best finish of his career last week at the Corban Invitational.
Playing as part of the Corban team, but not counting in the overall team total this week was Joey Ziogas. The first-year Warrior finished tied for 42nd, as Ziogas (88-81—167) bettered his opening round score by seven strokes on Tuesday.
With the fall season over, Corban and Concordia will return to the link in March to begin the 2011 spring season.
