SALEM, Ore. – Junior Gus Bermudez (Culver City, Calif.) scored his team and conference-leading 10th goal of the season to go along with freshman Aaron Kinnes' (Gladstone, Ore.) penalty kick score in the first half, as Corban's men's soccer team earned a hard-fought victory over The College of Idaho, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field.
After dropping a tough game twenty-four hours earlier to Warner Pacific, Corban rebounded nicely with a gutsy performance against the conference's No. 2-ranked Coyotes.
The College of Idaho got the scoring started in the 19th minute when Michael Meyers headed home a long cross from teammate Brad Byers into the lower right corner for an early 1-0 lead.
Just under eight minutes later, Bermudez was pulled down in the box therefore awarding the Warriors a penalty kick. Kinnes would calmly step up and put Corban on the board with a hard shot into the lower right corner for his second collegiate goal.
Both teams would battle over the remaining 19-plus minutes of the first half with neither team being able to crack the opposing defense, as a neck-and-neck battle went into the half knotted at 1-all.
In the second half, Corban had a chance to take the lead in the 60th minute when Bermudez rifled a shot from the near sideline that was deflected up and over the crossbar by C of I's goalkeeper therefore awarding the Warriors a corner kick.
Just over two minutes later, Bermudez would put home the game-winner when he received a combo pass from sophomore Peter Martin (Salem, Ore.) and freshman James Myrvold (Sandy, Ore.) to become the first Warrior in four seasons to score 10-or-more goals in a single year. The scoring play would begin with Myrvold sending a pass three-quarters of the way down the field where Martin quickly headed it to an awaiting Bermudez, who beat a C of I defender to the ball before sending a rolling shot into the lower right corner for a 2-1 Corban lead.
The College of Idaho would pepper Corban's goal over the final 27-plus minutes, as the visiting 'Yotes registered six shots with the last gasp effort coming in the final minute. C of I's Matt Kelly attempted to head a ball towards the Warriors' goal after Corban's keeper came off his line only to find the awaiting foot of junior Ruben Lopez (Keizer, Ore.), who cleared the ball away from the goal en route to preserving the Warriors' one-goal win.
Myrvold would register a game-high six saves for Corban, while The College of Idaho's Aaron Reynolds snagged four saves in the loss.
With today's win, Corban improves to 4-5-1 overall and evens its Cascade Collegiate Conference record at 3-3-0. On the other hand, Meanwhile, The College of Idaho falls to 4-5-0 overall and 3-3-0 in league games. The Warriors will return to the field on Saturday, October 9th, against the conference-leading Cavaliers of Concordia beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Portland.
