Heart-Breaker Slips Away from Corban in OT
BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Corban's men's soccer team played their hearts out, falling short in an extra time heart-breaker to Northwest, 2-1 in overtime, in Cascade Collegiate Conference action Friday on Warrior Field.
The Warriors struck first, as sophomore Aaron Kinnes (Gladstone, Ore.) scored his fourth goal of the season on a diagonal right-to-left shot from the 18 yard line that found the upper left corner of the net in the 43rd minute. Kinnes was set up by junior Gus Bermudez (Culver City, Calif.) and freshman Ibrahim Haruna (Gomby, Nigeria), as Haruna slid a pass to Bermudez whose deft touch gave Kinnes the opportunity. Corban took the 1-0 advantage into halftime, having out-shot Northwest 5-4 in the first frame.
Northwest came out strong in the second half, as the Eagles evened the score at 1-1 on Luke Fischer's header set up by a cross from Kyle Tatro in the 51st minute. Corban was unable to re-take the lead despite numerous chances, as sophomore Peter Martin (Salem, Ore.) fired a point-blank shot that ricocheted off the crossbar and down just in front of the goal line. Bermudez also had multiple opportunities, including a pair of shots that caromed off the post, including one that rolled along the mouth of the goal mere inches from crossing the line before being cleared by a Northwest defender.
The score remained deadlocked at 1-all following regulation, despite the Warriors again holding an advantage in shots, 11-8, over the visiting Eagles.
In the first period of extra time, Corban registered one shot, but Haruna's bid went wide right as the Warriors were unable to create more opportunities. Northwest went on the offensive, recording three shots including the eventual game-winner in the 99th minute, as Eagle forward Scott Schnitzer tapped home the deciding goal on a through ball by James Kerr from Wilbur Velasco.
Corban outshot Northwest overall, 17-15, as the Warriors placed six shots on goal, with three more rebounds off the pipes. Freshman goalkeeper James Myrvold (Sandy, Ore.) made a game-high tying five saves for the Warriors in a complete game effort between the pipes, while Northwest's Joe Galbraith also made five saves as the Eagles' net-minder for the entire game.
With the loss, Corban falls to 5-8-1 overall, including a 4-6-0 record in conference play. Northwest improves to 8-6-0 overall with a 5-5-0 mark in CCC action. Corban returns to action on Saturday, October 23rd, when the Warriors host the visiting Geoducks of Evergreen in a conference tilt scheduled to kick off at 3:00 p.m. on Warrior Field.
