11 Recognized as Red Lion Players of the Week

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Eleven student-athletes in the sports of volleyball, soccer, cross country and golf have earned Red Lion Player of the Week honors from the Cascade Collegiate Conference, the league office announced Monday.

The honorees:

Volleyball

Hitter – College of Idaho’s Sarah Harris, a 5-10 senior middle from Middleton, Idaho, has been named the Red Lion Hitter of the Week. During C of I’s 3-0 week, Harris led the Coyotes with 35 kills while also recording five solo blocks and 12 block assists. Harris helped the Yotes extend their home win streak to 29 straight and their CCC home streak to 53 in a row. Honorable mention: Jessica Lea, Eastern Oregon; Sarah Holgen, Southern Oregon; Bailey Wold, Corban; Clair Thiel, Concordia.

Setter – Concordia University’s Lindsay Mangan, a 5-8 freshman from Huntington Beach, Calif., has been named the Red Lion Setter of the Week. Winning the honor for the fourth time in five weeks, Mangan totaled 76 assists – including 42 in three sets vs. Corban – as the Cavs posted victories over Corban and Northwest Christian. Mangan also had 12 digs. Honorable mention: Madie Machurek, College of Idaho; Lauryn Ernster, Northwest; Emily Sampson, Eastern Oregon; Lindsey Stone, Southern Oregon; Megan Dees, Corban.

Libero – College of Idaho’s Whitney Owen, a 5-11 senior from Caldwell, Idaho, has been named the Red Lion Libero of the Week. The conference leader in digs, Owen had another stellar weekend. She totaled 61 digs in a 3-0 week and also averaged nearly two assists per set. She has 1,480 digs in her career, No. 3 on the Coyotes’ all-time list. Honorable mention: Kaitlyn Duncan, Eastern Oregon; Becky Johnstone, Southern Oregon; Bethany Durre, Corban; Aubrie Concannon, Concordia.

Men’s Soccer

Offensive – Warner Pacific College’s Alija Sacirovic, a 5-8 junior forward from Gresham, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Offensive Player of the Week. Sacirovic scored all three goals in a 3-2 win over Oregon Tech, including the game-winner with eight minutes to play, and added an assist in a 2-1 win over Northwest Christian. Honorable mention: Matt Kelly, College of Idaho; Facundo Dipascuale, Concordia.

Defensive – Concordia University’s Claudio Lazar, a 6-0 senior goalkeeper from Ploiesti, Romania, has been named the Red Lion Defensive Player of the Week. Lazar played 163 minutes of shutout soccer as the Cavs defeated Evergreen (6-0) and Northwest (1-0). Lazar had six saves, including stopping the potential game-tying penalty kick against NU. Lazar leads the CCC with a 0.42 goals-against average. Honorable mention: Zach Veasy, College of Idaho.

Women’s Soccer

Offensive – Oregon Institute of Technology’s Crystal Foster, a 5-7 sophomore midfielder from Redmond, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Offensive Player of the Week. The CCC’s leading scorer, Foster had three goals and one assist, including a hat trick in a 6-0 victory over Evergreen. She also set up the game-winning goal in a 2-0 victory over Northwest. Foster has 14 goals and three assists this season. Honorable mention: Erika Mouritsen, College of Idaho; Amanda Swenson, Eastern Oregon; Stephanie Carr, Southern Oregon; Emily Tsugawa, Corban; Alex Thomas, Concordia.

Defensive – Corban University’s Alexis Beattie, a 5-7 freshman goalkeeper from Brea, Calif., has been named the Red Lion Defensive Player of the Week. Beattie had a combined 11 saves as the Warriors, off to their best start (13-3) in school history, defeated College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon. Beattie allowed just one goal in 180 minutes. Honorable mention: Anna Tozier, Oregon Tech; Marie Burn, Concordia.

Cross Country

Men – Southern Oregon University’s David Laney, a senior from Portland, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Runner of the Week. Winning the award for the fourth time this season, Laney continued his hot streak as he won the individual title at the OSU Beaver Classic in Corvallis, leading the No. 1-ranked Raiders to the team crown. Laney covered the 8,000-meter distance in a time of 24:12. Honorable mention: Greg Montgomery, College of Idaho; Damion Flores, Eastern Oregon.

Women – Eastern Oregon University’s Karlee Coffey, a sophomore from La Grande, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Runner of the Week. As she has much of the season, Coffey ran away from the competition at the Coyote Invitational in Idaho, winning the event by nearly a minute. Coffey’s winning time of 17:38 over the 5K distance was just off her school record of 17:37. It marked Coffey’s third individual title this season. Honorable mention: Kristine Smith, College of Idaho; Anya Martinez, Southern Oregon.

Golf

Men – Corban University’s Joey Duwe, a junior from Kingston, Wash., has been named the Red Lion Golfer of the Week. Duwe won the fourth individual title of his career by shooting a 73-69—142 at the U-Vic Shootout in Victoria, B.C. Duwe came from three shots back in the second round to win the event by one stroke with his even-par effort. Honorable mention: Jed Dalton, Concordia.

Women – Concordia University’s Sunny Powers, a freshman from Medford, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Golfer of the Week. Powers fired rounds of 76-79—155 to finish second overall at the U-Vic Shootout in Victoria, B.C.
