NU Drops Season Opener to Carroll
HAVRE, Mont. - The Northwest University Eagles dropped their season opener to Carroll College tonight, 66-53, in the Montana State Northern Tournament.
Cold shooting plagued the Eagles in the first half as they managed to shoot only 5 for 29 from the floor (17%) and were held to 18 points for the half. Carroll shot 34% on 11-32 shooting and took a 31-18 lead into the locker room at the half.
The second half proved to be a different story for the Eagles as they heated up, shooting 47% from 2 point range and 43% from beyond the 3 point arc. NU and Carroll played to a 35-35 tie in the second half, so the difference in the game proved to be the first stanza for the Eagles.
Emily Drivstuen led the Eagles (0-1) with 14 points on 5 for 10 shooting (50%) for the night, Newcomer Kia Gibson score 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds for NU and had 2 blocks.
Alysha Green led the Fighting Saints (1-0) with a game high 21 points, adding 6 rebounds and 4 assists to her totals. Jen Guertin added 10 points and 7 rebounds for Carroll. The Saints held the rebound edge, 60-39 including 22 offensive rebounds. NU forced CC into 22 turnovers.
"I was really pleased with our effort," stated Eagle Head Coach Lori Napier. "We were a little too excited offensively in the first half but settled down in the second half and played more of our game. Carroll did a good job of not letting us get too close. I'm excited to get another chance at them on Saturday."
The Eagles will face tourney host, MSU-Northern tomorrow night and then meet Carroll again on Saturday before heading back to Kirkland.
