EUGENE, Ore. – Freshman defender Lucas Cash scored a shorthanded goal with 57 seconds remaining in the first overtime on Saturday, giving the Northwest Christian University men’s soccer team a 2-1 victory over Northwest. The Beacons grab their fifth win of the year, setting a new single-season standard.
NCU drew first blood in the game when Jun Yoon took a pass from teammate T.J. Prentice up the left side, crossed over and put his kick into the goal net from the right side just 8 minutes and 41 seconds into the game. The score remained that way for 68 minutes before the Eagles’ Wilbur Velasco scored up the middle off a through ball from Josh Peters (76:04). Regulation time ended with the teams deadlocked at 1-1.
Northwest Christian played shorthanded for over four minutes in regulation and into the overtime, losing forward Chris Longi to a red card at 85:24 after receiving his second yellow card of the night. It was then Cash who scored the golden goal with 57 seconds remaining in the first overtime with his goal from 5 yards out after the ball bounced around the Northwest box.
Northwest (5-5, 2-4 CCC) edged NCU in the shot category with a 13-12 margin. NCU goalkeeper Nick Kratzke had 6 saves in goal for the Beacons and earned the victory. Joe Galbraith had three save for Northwest. It was a physical contest with 31 total fouls called in the game.
Northwest Christian (5-5, 2-4) will be on the road again next weekend, traveling to Klamath Falls on Saturday to take on Oregon Tech at 7:00 pm.
