Knights Score Late to Edge Corban 2-1
PORTLAND, Ore. – Alija Sacirovic scored the game winning goal with less than three minutes remaining to give Warner Pacific a 2-1 victory over Corban at David Douglas High School today.
The host Knights opened the scoring on a goal from Julian Esquivel in the 27th minute, his first of the season. Several more good chances from WP were turned away by diving stops from Corban goalkeeper James Myrvold.
The visiting Warriors would draw even early in the second period, as Dustin Johann looped a crafty volley over the head of Knight keeper Sean Ervin. Devin Chaney was credited with the assist.
That set the stage for the heroics of Sacirovic late in the contest. Ervin came off his line to blast a clearance up the field that found Joel Duenas on the run, who then curled the final pass to Sacirovic where he finished at close range.
Warner Pacific outshot the Warriors 21-6 for the game, and led in corner kicks 7-2. Corban’s Myrvold had 7 saves in the losing effort.
The Knights have qualified for the CCC post season tournament with a 9-4-0 record in league play, and a 9-7-1 overall record. Corban falls to 5-11-1 overall and 4-9-0 in CCC play.
