CALDWELL, Idaho - Aaron Reynolds made a season-high nine saves, including four top-notch saves after halftime, as The College of Idaho and Concordia University played to a scoreless draw at Simplot Stadium.
For the Coyotes (9-7-1, 8-4-1 CCC), the tie gives the squad their own destiny in the right to host a Cascade Conference Tournament semifinal game – needing a win in their season finale at Warner Pacific to earn the bid. For the Cavaliers (14-2-1, 11-1-1), it was their 13th shutout of the season, establishing a new program record.
The Yotes came out firing in the first half, peppering the CU net. Brad Byers launched a 20-yard strike in the tenth minute that missed just left of the post, with Mats Boehnke ripping a 15-yard shot that Cavs keeper Claudio Lazar deflected, the collecting a rebound attempt from the senior.
Shaunovan Wilson had the best opportunity of the half for the Cavaliers, blasting a 20-yard free kick that Reynolds was able to save.
After the Yotes nearly got on the board in the 63rd minute on a Brian Buckingham header that was punched off the goal line by Lazar, the CU attack picked up the pace. In the 69th minute, Michael Chamberlain laced a one-time shot from 25-yards out the Reynolds had to redirect off the crossbar, while in the 73rd minute, Jared Brace was robbed by Reynolds on a sitter off a corner kick.
The Cavs had their best chance in the 81st minute, as a defensive bobble allowed Brace a chance at goal, but Reynolds deflected the ball to the right corner of the six-yard box. Chamberlain collected the ball, but with a wide open net, his flick missed right of the post.
In the extra sessions, neither team had a quality chance in the first ten minutes, but both teams had chances in the final frame. Reynolds made a diving save of an Evan Denmark shot in the 105th minute, while both squads had to turn away corner kick opportunities in the final three minutes.
Concordia held a 15-11 edge in shots, including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. The Yotes had five corner kicks in the draw, with the two teams combining for 19 fouls in the match.
The C of I closes out the regular season next weekend, traveling to Warner Pacific for a 1 p.m. (PT) start.
