LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team coasted to a 94-34 win over Walla Walla University Saturday.
The Mountaineers (2-0) finished with five players in double figures led by Shaylee Nielsen’s 13 points on 6 for 9 shooting from the field. Kyle Miller and Samantha Flett each had 12 points, and Kelsea Hurliman and Nyesha Joseph each added 10 points.
Walla Walla’s Lisa Blackley hit a jump shot with 7:37 remaining in the first half to make the lead, 30-14, in favor of Eastern. The Mountaineers would then go on a 24-0 run over the next 7:20 to lead, 54-16, at halftime.
It was the highest point total for the EOU women since the Mountaineers defeated Walla Walla College on Oct. 30, 2008, 104-51, in Hermiston, Ore. Saturday, Eastern made 40 its 75 shots from the field, and 8 of its 13 three-point attempts.
EOU outrebounded the Wolves, 54-22. Walla Walla was held to 26 percent shooting from the field, and was 0 for 11 from behind the perimeter. Nicke Parks led WWU with 12 points.
The Mountaineers host Yakima Community College in a non-counting contest on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 1 p.m. before traveling to Walla Walla University for its next game on Nov. 17. Eastern’s next home game is Nov. 19 in the Aramark Holiday Classic against Montana Western at 6 p.m.
