Concordia's Jackie Hendrickson scored the game-winner Saturday, as the nation's top-ranked Cavaliers came-from-behind to defeat Corban by a single goal in the Capital City.
Concordia Overcomes Deficit in Win at Corban
BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore.—A day after surrendering their first goal of the season, the No. 1-ranked Concordia women’s soccer team faced its first deficit, as Corban struck first before the Cavaliers responded for a 2-1 win on Saturday.
With the result, Concordia improved to 12-0-1 on the season and 4-0-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play while Corban fell to 10-3-0 and 2-2-0 in league action.
“To fall behind and to have enough energy and intelligence to come back in that environment, I was really proud of our team,” CU head coach Grant Landy said. “Not many teams can go over a tough stretch like this, having eight road games in our last nine games, and remain undefeated.”
Tera McDonough gave the Warriors the lead with a score in the 35th minute of play, the first goal scored in eth first-half of play against CU this season. At the 24:12 mark, McDonough connected for a shot which Cavalier keeper Tori Talbutt (Boise, Idaho/Capital H.S.) rejected, but following the play, McDonough corralled the rebound for a successful put back into the net.
Training 1-0 at the break after being outshot 6-to-3, Concordia regrouped quickly to square the match in the 51st minute as the Corban defense was flagged for a foul which allowed CU’s Kelton McFadden (Boise, Idaho/Timberline H.S.) to connect on her second penalty kick of the year and her third goal of the season.
“Tahlia (O’Loughlin) made that play happen,” Landy said. “The ball was almost out of bounds but she didn’t give up on it, she stripped the ball and got into the box.”
Less than four minutes later, the Cavaliers snared the lead as Jackie Hendrickson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart H.S.) delivered on a one-timer into the upper left corner after receiving a pass from teammate Tahlia O’Loughlin. The score represented Hendrickson’s fourth of the season and O’Loughlin’s third assist of the year.
With the win, Concordia improved to 35-0-1 all-time against Corban while the Warriors broke an eight-game scoreless streak against the Cavaliers with their last scoring effort occurring on Oct. 2, 2004 in a 3-1 Cavalier win.
After being outshot 6-3 in the first half, CU generated a 7-1 gap in attempts in the second half. The Cavaliers also enjoyed a 9-1 lead in corner kicks. Both Talbutt and Corban goalkeeper Alexis Beattie registered four saves.
“We were without Chelsie (Malness) and Lauryn (Helmers) in the second half, but that is the whole reason why we have depth on the roster and we make sure everyone is ready,” Landy said. “Down the stretch and hopefully into the playoffs, we will need a number of people to step up and make a play.”
Concordia returns to action on Oct. 15 when it hosts Evergreen State at Delta Park at 5 p.m., while Corban will not step back onto the field until Oct. 16 against conference rival Northwest Christian at 2:30 p.m. on Warrior Field.
