Westmont Comes Back to Defeat NU in Double Overtime

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Westmont College (Calif.) came from behind to tie the game in regulation and then go on to defeat Northwest University, 98-92, in two overtimes tonight in an exciting non-conference game in the NU Pavilion.
 
Westmont’s Anthony Lipold hit a 3-point field goal with 8 seconds to go in regulation to tie the game 71-71 to send it into the first overtime. Northwest led 69-63 with 38 seconds to go in regulation, but would go 0-4 from the free throw line down the stretch as Westmont would get back into the game on baskets by Preston Branson, Marlow Brooks and the 3-pointer by Lipold.
 
The second overtime would end deadlocked at 80-80 as Northwest would again miss an opportunity to end the game at the free throw line as NU's Rich Skillman would go 1 for 2 from the line with 11 seconds remaining. Westmont's Dan Rasp's jumper would bounce off the rim with 5 seconds to go s the teams would head into the second extra period.
 
Westmont would go 9 for 10 from the free throw line including 7-8 shooting by Jordan Sachs as the Warriors from Santa Barbara would out score Northwest 18-12 in the second overtime for the win.
 
Northwest (2-1) was led by 6-9 senior Greg George (Seattle, Wash.) with his 19 points and 9 rebounds, junior Jordan Call’s (Kirkland, Wash) 18 points and junior Rich Skillman’s (Everson, Wash.) 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Eagles shot 43% from 2-point field goal range and 40% from beyond the 3-point arc. NU would shoot 58% from the free throw line making 24 of 41 attempts.
 
Preston Branson led Westmont (2-0) with a game high 24 points. Dan Rasp added 18 points, Anthony Lipold 14 points, and Jordan Sachs with 13 points. The Warriors out rebounded Northwest, 45-43. Westmont shot 50% from both 2-point and 3-point range and converted 71% of their free throws (29-41).
 
Northwest will remain home to host the University of Puget Sound on Nov. 16 and Westmont travels to Olympia to play the Evergreen State College tomorrow.
