Katelin Shannon had 18 points and eight steals in Lady Yotes win
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Katelin Shannon scored a career-high 18 points and became just the sixth player in program history to record eight steals in a game, as The College of Idaho ended an eight-game losing streak to Montana Western, defeating the Bulldogs, 72-62, at the Westminster Fall Classic.
It marked the first win for the Lady Yotes (2-2) against Western since the 1997-98 season and salvaged their first victory at the tournament.
Shannon converted 10-of-10 free throws on the night and added six rebounds. The sophomore joins Brette Rubie, Christon Vander Esch, Kasey Hooter, Heidi Goicoechea, and Jeannie Thompson in the eight-steal club – with only Vander Esch (11 steals in a game in 2006-07 and 15 steals in a game in 2008-09) recording more.
After Western grabbed a 40-36 lead with just under 16 minutes to go on a Laura Geis putback, Shannon started a 10-0 run with a three-pointer, with a fast-break Diamond Mitchell lay-up giving The C of I a 46-40 lead. The Bulldogs would fight back, rallying to take a 53-52 lead on a pair of Rheanna Padden free throws with six minutes to play.
Freshman Dayna Drager responded with a trey to give the Coyotes the lead for good, with The C of I hitting 14-of-16 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Nicole Gall scored 18 points, had nine rebounds, five blocks, five steals, and four assists in the win, with Drager adding 12 points. Roxanne Thurman had 15 points and 11 rebounds in the loss for Western, who committed 32 turnovers on the afternoon.
The Lady Yotes return to action next weekend in La Grande, Ore., at the Aramark Classic – meeting Walla Walla on Friday and a rematch with Montana Western on Saturday.
