Corban's Bennett Nets Double-Double in Loss to TMC

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Sophomore Tess Bennett (Sutherlin, Ore.) scored a team-high 20 points on 9-for-11 shooting from the field and grabbed a game-high tying 10 rebounds, but it was not enough as Corban's women's basketball team fell to The Master's College, 81-67, Saturday inside Bross Gymnasium.
Along with Bennett's double-double, senior Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) and junior Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) added 15 and 13 points respectively. On the boards, the second-year Warrior would get help from Miller and sophomore Christy Mosier (Bend, Ore.)with six and five rebounds respectively.
Closing out its two-game Southern California road trip against a pair of Golden State Athletic Conference powerhouses, Corban held an early 2-0 lead following a Steigleman lay-in a mere 16 seconds into the game. The visiting Warriors would hold that lead over the next 90 seconds before The Master's grabbed a slim one-point lead (3-2) after a Lena Rivera lay-up and never looked back. The host Mustangs would increase their lead to as much as 15 points (42-27) in the opening half thanks to a Lauren Labat jumper before TMC had to settle for a nine-point half time lead (42-33).
In the second half, The Master's College would push its lead to as much as 20 points (69-49) after a Zoe Scott lay-up with 7:22 remaining. Corban would cut its deficit to single digits (74-67) thanks to an 18-5 run over a span of five-plus minutes, but the host Mustangs would hit a pair of three-pointers and a clutch free throw over the final 72 seconds en route to securing the 14-point win (81-67).
The Master's College was led in scoring by Erica Inge, who tallied a game-high 24 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field to go along with a 7-for-9 performance at the free throw line. Ella Joines added 12 points for the Mustangs, while Morgan Schwegler and Theresa Brown each pulled down a game-high tying 10 rebounds for the victors.
In the game, Corban shot 27-for-62 (43.5%) from the field to go along with a 3-for-11 (27.3%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 10-for-13 (76.9%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, The Master's College was 26-for-68 (38.2%) from the field, 9-for-30 (30.0%) from long distance, and 20-for-27 (74.1%) at the charity stripe.
With tonight's result, Corban falls to 0-2 on the season and The Master's College improves to 2-1 this year. The Warriors will return to the court on Tuesday, November 16th, against NCAA Division III member George Fox beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Newberg.
