PORTLAND, Ore. – Courtney May’s triple-double led the way as Concordia combined strong shooting and a smothering defense in defeating George Fox 84-64 in a women’s non-conference game Tuesday night at Cavalier Gymnasium

The win improves Concordia’s record to 6-3 and extends the Cavaliers’ winning streak to six. George Fox falls to 3-1 with the loss. Concordia’s win broke a 19-game losing streak to George Fox, stretching back to a 77-73 CU win on Jan. 23, 1992, in Newberg.

Concordia trailed for only 22 seconds early in the first half, when the Bruins used a 5-0 run to take a 5-4 lead. Danielle Clauson’s jumper gave the Cavs the 6-5 lead, and after a George Fox turnover, Clauson hit another jumper to extend the lead to three points. George Fox tied it at 12 apiece with 14:11 remaining in the half, but Concordia scored 12 of the next 15 points to earn a nine-point advantage, and the Bruins would get no closer than five for the rest of the half.

The Cavaliers’ lead reached 10 points on two occasions late in the first period, and CU held a 42-35 advantage going into the break. Concordia held George Fox to 37.1 percent shooting (13-of-35) in the half, while Clauson led the way for the CU offense with 17 points before the break.

A pair of Keisha Gordon layups to start the second half pulled the Bruins to within three points at 42-39, but Clauson’s layup on the other end sparked an 8-2 CU run to put the Cavs in control again with a 50-41 advantage. May’s three-pointer with 13:02 remaining put CU up by 11 at 56-45, and the Cavs’ lead remained in double-digits the rest of the way.

Clauson (Edmonds, Wash./Kings H.S.) tallied 32 points on 14-of-25 shooting to lead all scorers. May (Napavine, Wash./Napavine H.S.) added 13 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds and Megan Padilla (Sacramento, Calif./Christian Brothers H.S.) contributed 10 points for the Cavs. The Bruins’ Keisha Gordon scored 21 points and Hannah Munger added 16 in the losing effort.

The Cavaliers scored the most points against George Fox and posted the largest margin of victory against the Bruins since Puget Sound defeated them 85-61 on Jan. 6, 2006.

Concordia heads to California to play in the Holy Names Thanksgiving Classic, with games against Cal State Maritime on Friday at 12 p.m. and Holy Names on Saturday at 4 p.m.
