Steigleman, Bennett Lead Corban in Opener

SALEM, Ore. – Junior Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) and sophomore Tess Bennett (Sutherlin, Ore.) scored a game-high 19 points each, as Corban's women's basketball team fell to Academy of Art, 93-73, in the opener of the Bruce Henderson Memorial Capital City Classic Friday inside Cone Field House on the campus of Willamette University.
Steigleman would produce her game-high point total on 7-for-23 shooting from the field, while Bennett shot 8-for-18 to go along with a team-high 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Along with the aforementioned duo, senior Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) added 15 points to go along with junior Becky Buhler's (Clackamas, Ore.) six points.
A back-and-forth game over the opening 10-plus minutes would result in a 17-17 tie after a pair of Miller free throws with 10:49 remaining in the first half. Corban would grab its largest and last lead of the game (21-17) after a pair of Bennett jumpers with the final one coming at the 8:28 mark of the opening half. Over the next seven minutes and 40 seconds, Academy of Art would use a 23-8 run en route to grabbing an 11-point lead (40-29) before settling for a 14-point (45-31) halftime lead.
The second half would continue with NCAA Division II member Academy of Art holding a double-digit lead throughout, as the Urban Knights pushed their lead to as much as 23 points (87-64) after a Jasmine English jumper with 2:30 left in the game. Academy of Art would set for a 20-point win (93-73) en route to capturing its first victory of the season.
Jessica Nolan led Academy of Art with 17 points, while three other Urban Knights – Devin London, Lorriane Etchell, and Alisa Griggs – scoring in double figures with 14, 12, and 11 points respectively. Nolan would also pull down a game-high 11 rebounds, while handing out a game-high six assists.
Corban shot 28-for-78 (35.9%) from the field, while turning in a 4-for-21 (19.0%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 13-for-20 (65.0%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, Academy of Art was 35-for-66 (53.0%) from the field, 5-for-14 (35.7%) from long distance, and 18-for-26 (69.2%) from the charity stripe.
With tonight's result, Corban falls to 1-4 overall and Academy of Art improves to 1-3 on its young season. The Warriors will return to the hardwood on Friday, December 3rd, in their Cascade Collegiate Conference opener against rival Northwest Christian beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. inside the Morse Event Center in Eugene.
