OAKLAND, Calif. –
Concordia extended its winning streak to eight games with an 80-67 victory over Holy Names Saturday afternoon at the Holy Names Thanksgiving Classic.
With the win, Concordia improves to 8-3 this season.
Holy Names scored five of the first seven points, but Concordia responded with a 10-2 run and the Cavaliers took control of the contest soon after. The Hawks took their final lead of the game at 13-12 with 14:15 remaining in the first half before Brittney Yates' shot put the Cavs up 14-13 and sparked a 14-point streak that gave CU a 26-13 lead nine minutes before halftime.
Concordia led 41-30 at the break on the strength of 54.8 percent shooting (17-of-31) while the Hawks struggled to shoot 27.8 percent (10-of-36).
The Cavaliers opened the second half on a 24-10 run to increase their lead to 25 points in the first eight minutes of the period. Holy Names worked its way back into the contest over the following nine minutes, pulling to within nine points at 72-63 with just under three minutes remaining in the game. That was as close as the Hawks would get, however, as the Cavaliers stretched the lead back to 13 points to pull out the 80-67 win.
Concordia finished the game shooting 51.7 percent from the field (30-of-58) compared to Holy Names’ 30.9 percent (21-of-68). Both teams struggled with ball control, as the Cavs finished the game with 36 turnovers and the Hawks gave the ball away 32 times.
Danielle Clauson (Edmonds, Wash./Kings H.S.) finished with a game-high 23 points for the Cavs. Courtney May (Napavine, Wash./Napavine H.S.) continued to fill up the stat sheet, posting 19 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and three assists. Megan Padilla (Sacramento, Calif./Christian Brothers H.S.) and Sarah Eischen (Hillsboro, Ore./Hillsboro H.S.) each tallied 12 points for CU, with Eischen grabbing nine rebounds.
Yesenia Garzon posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Hawks, while Danika Potestio added 10 points for the hosts.
Concordia returns to action Dec. 3, when the Cavaliers open Cascade Collegiate Conference play hosting Southern Oregon at 7:30 p.m. in Cavalier Gymnasium.
