MONMOUTH, Ore. – Junior Erik Cronrath (Battle Ground, Wash.) earned all-tournament honors after helping lead Corban's men's basketball team to a third place finish at the Capital City Classic Saturday thanks to 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds in a 112-93 win over Pacifica inside the New P.E. Building on the campus of Western Oregon University.
The 6-foot-8 junior was one of six Warriors to score in double figures, as senior Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.) led Corban with 18 points followed by sophomore Jacob Kopra (Gresham, Ore.), junior Jonathan Ramirez (New Britain, Conn.), Cronrath, freshman Jordan Carter (Salem, Ore.), and senior Nash Keene (Aumsville, Ore.) with 17, 16, 15, 12, and 11 points respectively. On the boards, Cronrath was aided by Kopra and senior Deonte Johnson (Modesto, Calif.) with six and five rebounds respectively to go along with a game-high five assists by Carter and senior Bryan Martin (Salem, Ore.).
Over the opening 12-plus minutes, the two teams battled through 10 ties with the final one coming at the 7:23 mark with the score knotted at 36-36 after a three-pointer by freshman Josiah Sebens (Bellingham, Wash.). The Warriors would then use a half-closing 22-11 run en route to grabbing an 11-point lead (58-47) thanks to another three-pointer by Sebens at the buzzer.
The second half would be a curtain call for Corban, as the Warriors increased their halftime advantage to 20 points over the opening eight-plus minutes with junior Jake Mauermann (Clackamas, Ore.) nailing a three-pointer at the 11:49 mark to push the designated visiting team's lead to 81-61. Pacifica would battle back to under single digits (88-79) thanks to an 18-7 run before Corban used a perfect 12-for-12 performance at the free throw line over the final seven-plus minutes en route to securing its seventh victory of the season.
Pacifica was led in scoring by Vincente Valdez's game-high 23 points, while five other Gladiators – Anthony Freitas, Julius Armon, Josh Kasim, Duwayne Tutt, and Justin Latham – scored in double figures with 14, 11, 10, 10, and 10 points respectively. Tutt would pull down a team-high seven rebounds, while Valdez and Freitas handed out a team-best four assists each for Pacifica.
Corban shot 32-for-60 (53.3%) from the field to go along with a 13-for-21 (61.9%) performance from beyond the three-point line and a 35-for-43 (81.4%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, Pacifica was 35-for-67 (52.2%) from the field, 9-for-22 (40.9%) from long distance, and 14-for-21 (66.7%) from the charity stripe.
With tonight's result, Corban improves to 7-1 overall and Pacifica drops its fifth straight game falling to 2-5 overall. The Warriors will return to the court for their Cascade Collegiate Conference opener on Friday, December 3rd, against rival Northwest Christian beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the Morse Event Center in Eugene.
