Concordia Advances to CCC Championship with 4-0 Win over C of I
BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore. – Top-ranked Concordia scored a pair of goals in each half as the Cavaliers shut out College of Idaho 4-0 Saturday night at Delta Park to advance to the Cascade Collegiate Conference championship game.
The win improves Concordia’s record to 17-0-2, while College of Idaho falls to 10-8-0.
“This is a game where everybody had to pick up their energy level and do their jobs a little bit better and I thought the team responded very well,” Landy said. “I thought we had some really nice combinations from back-to-midfield- to-front.”
The Cavs scored their first goal in the 20th minute when Hayley Hayes took a pass from Lauryn Helmers in front of the goal, snuck past the defense and shot to the right of C of I goalkeeper Melissa Holmes.
The Cavaliers didn’t waste much time for their next one, as Brittany Orr took a free kick to the right side of the goal where Adrienne Lomasson sent a low shot past Holmes in the 24th minute to give CU a 2-0 lead.
Orr scored the third goal for the Cavs from close range off a Jenna Peterson pass in the 66th minute, and Peterson made it 4-0 in the 71st minute when she launched a high shot from 25-yards out that hit the crossbar and bounced into the net.
“Getting the first goal is always great but getting that second one can really demoralize a team,” Landy said. “But you have to give C of I credit. Even at a couple of goals down they created dangerous chances and serves into the box. Their players up front are very dangerous and it’s hard to keep that team without scoring for 90 minutes.”
Concordia posted nine shots in each half to out-shoot the Coyotes 18-7 in the match. Tori Talbutt had four saves and earned the shutout for the Cavs, while Holmes played the entire match in goal for C of I and tallied eight saves.
A year after having to travel to play in the title match, the Cavaliers will host Corban in the CCC championship Nov. 13 at Delta Park. Opening kickoff is yet to be determined.
“It’s what you work for the whole year,” Landy said. “You spend the first 18 games of the season to put yourself in this position and to get that advantage. Corban has had a great season and they played us hard at their place. I expect really back-and-forth final.”
