Eagles Strong Second Half Downs Corban
KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University broke open a close first half to pull away in the second half for a 74-59 Cascade Conference victory over Corban University tonight in league play.
After a tightly contested 34-34 first half which saw seven ties and five lead changes, the NU Eagles out scored Corban 40-25 to gain their eighth victory of the season and improve their CCC mark to 3-1 while handing Corban their first conference loss.
In the second half, NU would be leading 42-40 with three minutes and ten seconds gone, but would then go on a 8-0 run to increase their lead to 10, 50-40 at the 13:03 mark punctuated by a Kia Gibson jumper off teammate’s Ebany Herd’s assist. The Eagles’ Brittney Marshall would tip in her offensive rebound after a Domi Mendezona miss to put Northwest up 60-45 with 7:37 to go in the game. NU’s Kia Gibson would lay the ball in to increase NU’s lead to 64-45 with 6:55 remaining. Corban would not give in and they would battle back to within nine points, 65-57, with three minutes and five seconds to go in the game, but six straight NU points would get their lead back up to 72-57 with just 1:32 to go as it would be enough to seal the win for the Eagles.
Senior Kia Gibson led Northwest U. (8-4, 3-1 CCC) the second straight night with a game high 17 points and added 5 rebounds. Senior guard, Brittney Marshall, added 11 points while freshman Domi Mendezona and junior Jessalyn Jackson each dropped in 10 points for the Eagles. Jackson added 11 rebounds for the double-double along with two blocked shots. The Eagles only shot 38% for the game but held Corban to 33% shooting from 2-point range. NU dropped in 89% of their free throw attempts making 16 of 18 from the line.
Corban University (5-5, 2-1 CCC) was led by Katie Steigleman’s 16 points. Jenessa Miller added 12 points and 8 rebounds and Becky Buhler contributed 11 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for the Warriors. Corban made good 35% of their 3-point attempts (6-17) and converted 58% of their free throws (7-12).
“We had another great second half tonight and everyone contributed,” commented NU Head Coach Lori Napier. “It was a big win for us.”
Northwest players will now take their final exams this coming week and resume play on Friday, Dec. 17 when they play Lewis-Clark State in the non-conference contest at home. Corban will travel to Atherton, Calif. for a non-league contest with Menlo College on Dec. 17.
