No. 8 Eastern Rolls Past Southern
ASHLAND, ORE. -- Thomas McCarthy came off the bench for 19 points as eighth-ranked Eastern Oregon scored a 80-68 victory over Southern Oregon tonight at McNeal Pavilion.
Eastern Oregon improved to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Southern Oregon dropped to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in conference. SOU hosts College of Idaho tomorrow at 5:30.
McCarthy had 19 points, including four 3-pointers. Jason Mumm finished with 14 points and JC Cook added 13.
Southern Oregon was led by Jordan Highland's 20 points. Freshman Kyle Tedder finished with 17 points and made three 3-pointers.
The Raiders cut the lead to four early in the second half with a Tedder lead to cut it to a 46-42 advantage. A layup by Herrera cut the lead to 46-44.
Eastern pushed the lead back to 55-46 on a 3-pointer by Thomas McCarthy with just over 14 minutes to play. McCarthy then pushed the lead to a dozen at 60-48 with a layup at the 12 minute mark and layup by Jason Mumm had the Mountaineers up 66-51.
After that Eastern rolled to victory.
Eastern shot 51 percent in the second half and made 12 of 15 free throws (80 percent).
Kellen Hawley led SOU with seven rebounds and Herrera had three assists and three steals.
