EUGENE, Ore. – The Simpson University women’s basketball team picked up their first road victory of the season on Tuesday night, taking down Northwest Christian 74-68 in the Morse Event Center. The win also snapped a three-game winning streak in the series for the Beacons.
After trailing by 12 points at the intermission and shooting 21%, NCU took charge of the second half, outscoring the Redhawks 47-41, shooting 44%. After trailing by as many as 21 points, the Beacons climbed back to within four points with just under a minute to play, but once again was unable to complete to comeback, having put themselves in too deep a hole.
The Beacons (4-8) were led by Hope Williams, scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Williams was the catalyst for NCU’s comeback attempt, scoring 17 of her points after the intermission while firing 8-for-11 from the floor in the second half. Aly Bruns (pictured) followed with a season-high 19 points, shooting 50% from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 at the free-throw line, upping her team-leading free-throw percentage to .868 on the season. Sheena Alexander had another strong night off the bench, scoring 11 points and Lindsey Shearer led the Beacons with four assists. Lori Renner scored just two points before fouling out but added nine rebounds as NCU out-boarded Simpson 57-35 in the game.
Simpson (3-10) was led by Nichole Jones, scoring 17 points. Kylie Shaw added 16 points, five assists and three steals.
Northwest Christian will be back in action on Thursday, December 30th with a Cascade Collegiate Conference game scheduled against Southern Oregon at 7:30 pm. The Beacons will be looking for their first ever win against the Raiders, who hold a 7-0 lead in the all-time series.
