NAMPA, Idaho—Sending a contingent of middle-distance racers to open the indoor season, the Concordia University track & field teams combined to secure four NAIA automatic qualifiers and added a provisional qualifier at the Boise State University Jackson’s Open held at the Idaho Center.

Andria Scheese and Marcus Nelson both captured titles in the 3,000-meter run to lead the Cavs.

Scheese defeated the field with a 10:20.37 for a three-second personal record and easily bettered the ‘A’ standard of 10:30.00 in the event. Lauren Moran placed second in the women’s field with a 10:31.59 to reach provisional status. Also hitting a personal record in the race was Maggie Pesanti with an 11:27.82 for seventh place.

Nelson, fresh off earning All-American honors during the cross country season, crossed the line in 8:41.47 to slip just under the auto standard of 8:43.00. Nelson’s mark moved the sophomore into No. 2 all-time on the CU’s performance list behind former NAIA indoor national champion Eric Burk, who registered an 8:10.57 last season.

The Cavaliers sent several individuals to compete in the 1,000-meter run with Cory Pena and Cordero Cisneros reaching automatic status. Pena took first overall in the race with a 2:28.39 while Cisneros placed third with a 2:31.23. Pena’s mark was the third fastest in school history, just shy of Cisneros’ personal record of 2:28.67.

Josh Burrus finished in 11th place with a 2:36.60 and Jamin Coy wound up in 17th place with a 2:42.48.

“Today was a good chance for our cross country kids to get quality track action in and get some qualifiers out of the way,” CU head coach Randy Dalzell said. “I really thought Marcus, Cory and Andria looked sharp as they dominated their respective events.”

The Cavaliers return to action on Jan. 28-29 when CU travels to compete at the University of Washington Indoor Invitational held in Seattle.
