Buzzer Beater Lifts Southern Oregon Over Warner Pacific
PORTLAND, Ore. – Whitney Scott sank a 12 foot jumper as time expired to send Southern Oregon past Warner Pacific 61-60 at C.C. Perry Gym tonight.
The host Knights (5-3, 1-1 CCC) held a 52-41 lead at the 9:27 mark in the second half, but could not hold on. SOU (6-5, 1-1 CCC) slowly chipped away at the lead and took advantage of three WP turnovers in the last minute.
The first period looked to be going the Knights’ way as the hosts forged a 10 point advantage with 1:02 to play in the period. WP held the Raiders to 27 percent shooting in the half, and Miranda Holenstein scored 14 points to pace the Knights to a 32-25 lead at the break.
Warner Pacific managed to keep SOU at arms length in the second period, and Holenstein hit two free throws to the Knights a 60-56 lead with 2:05 to play. WP would not score again however, and suffered three ball handling miscues to set up a 5-0 run for SOU and Scott’s game winner.
Holenstein narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with 21 points and nine rebounds. Layne Tucker and Kelsey Mattsen each added 14 counters.
Southern Oregon was led by Carly Wood with 14 points off the bench. Scott finished with 13 points and five rebounds.
