REDDING, Cal. – The Oregon Tech softball team suffered an 8-0 setback in the 2010 season opener to defending NAIA national champion Cal Baptist University (6-0) at the Field of Dreams this morning in Redding. The game was called in the sixth inning due to the 8-run

Oregon Tech (0-1) had their best opportunity to score in the top of the first inning when Andria Wheatley led off the game with a walk and advanced to second on a Sara Coates sac bunt. A wild pitch sent Wheatley to third base, but was stranded their after Cal Baptist pitcher Emma Holden struck out the next two Owl batters.

Cal Baptist struck quickly in their first at bat, as Kendall Gorham put the home team up 2-0 on a one out two run homer, which proved to be all the runs the Lancers would need. Cal Baptists added two unearned runs in the third, while another two run blast in the fourth made it 6-0 and single runs in the fifth and sixth would make it 8-0.

Holden kept the Owl bats quiet, striking out 14 batters and not allowing a hit in the Owls opening game. Oregon Tech stranded five base runners, reaching all on walks.

Oregon Tech will close out day 1 of the Simpson University tournament with a 1:00 pm game versus Biola University and a 3:00 pm game versus No. 4 ranked Point Loma University.
