C of I Skipper Shawn Humberger won his 300th career game
CALDWELL, Idaho - College of Idaho skipper Shawn Humberger became just the third coach in Coyote athletic history to post 300 career wins, as his baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Whitman College, winning 13-1 and 9-0, this afternoon at Wolfe Field.
The tenth-year head coach joins his mentor, Tim Mooney, and former Coyote men’s basketball coach, Marty Holly, as the only other C of I mentors to register 300 wins in a career.
Diego Robles led a 28 hit attack on the day with a 5-for-5 afternoon, with a double, home run, five runs scored, and five RBI.
The opener saw the Missionaries (0-8) strike first, as Blaine Mercado singled home a run, giving the visitors the lead. It would remain that way until the fourth, when Eric Tolleson hit three batters to load the bases, with Alex Reyes tying the game with a walk and Jesse Dodd giving the Coyotes (6-2) the lead for good with a sacrifice fly.
Dodd would provide the big blow in a three-run fifth, lacing a two-run single that made it 5-1. The Yotes would break the game open in the sixth, as Gavin Gamboa lined a two-run triple, part of a five-run inning. Robles capped the scoring in the seventh with a long home run to left.
Wes Semonchuk picked up his first collegiate win, going six innings of four-hit ball, striking out four. Robles had four hits in the game, with Gamboa, Jordan Lanman, and Jared Arehart each recording two. Jay Richards had two hits for Whitman.
Game 2 saw the Yotes use a seven-run second inning to cruise to their second shutout win of the season, as three pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout.
Two-run singles by Brett Dvorak and Tyler Andazola provided the offense, as eleven men came to the plate in the big inning. Bobby Wassmann allowed just three hits and fanned four in four innings to get the win, while Jesse Vermillion and Brian Hildebrand kept the Whits at bay the rest of the way.
Dvorak went 3-for-4 with three RBI, with Lanman, Dodd, Ray Santiago, and Dan Harrington all recording two hits for the Coyotes.
The Yotes put their five-game win streak on the line tomorrow, hosting Oregon Tech in a single non-conference game at Noon.
