SOU Withstands Cavs in Regular-Season Finale
PORTLAND, Ore.—Down by 11 in the first half, Southern Oregon powered back with a 16-4 run to close the first period en route to an 80-68 win at Concordia in women’s basketball action on Saturday night.
With the win, SOU improved to 19-10 on the season and 8-10 in CCC play to capture the No. 7 seed in the CCC Tournament. Concordia fell to 13-15 overall and 7-11 in league action to finish as the CCC’s No. 8 seed. Southern Oregon will travel to face Warner Pacific in the opening round of competition on Tuesday, February 23, while the Cavaliers will face top-seeded The College of Idaho. Opening tip for both contests is set for 7:30 p.m.
After holding on to a 18-17 lead, Concordia extended its advantage to 11 with a 14-4 run that was punctuated by a Kai Schmidt three pointer with 6:21 remaining. Not going away, the Raiders responded with a 16-4 outburst to reclaim the lead just before the end of the half.
Dominating on the boards, Southern Oregon expanded its gap to as much as 21 points with the score 73-52 with less than five minutes to go before finishing with the 12-point victory.
SOU’s Jackie Speer, the CCC’s leading scorer at 20.6 points per game, led all payers with 27 points, including 16 in the second half, after shooting 9-of-14 from the floor and 9-of-15 from the free throw line. She was joined by Emily Brookings and Ashley Baker with 14 and 10 points, respectively, to give the Raiders three players in double figures.
Concordia was led by Danielle Clauson, the league’s No. 4 scorer at 16.6 points per game, who finished with 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Rachel Scarpelli added 14 points with a pair of three pointers and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
Concordia outshot the Raiders .463 to .424 but were hampered with a 40-28 disadvantage in rebounds. The Cavs hit 15-of-18 from the charity stripe while SOU took advantage of 12 steals.
